The legendary performers will be at the heart of the 90-minute TV movie "Stan and Ollie," the British Broadcasting Corporation has announced.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, who first formed their famous comedy duo Laurel and Hardy in the US in 1927, went on to have a long and fruitful Hollywood career, including starring roles in around 100 films.

The forthcoming TV movie from the BBC will not examine the pair's early years, nor revisit their success in the following decades. Instead, "Stan and Ollie" will depict the two comedians' last years, starting with their tour through the UK in 1953. In spite of declining popularity and personal problems, Laurel and Hardy were met with a warm welcome in Britain, but their tour was disrupted when Hardy suffered a heart attack.

When Laurel refused to perform alone, his partner left his hospital bed and took to the stage for the remaining performances in the tour. These were the pair's last shows, as Hardy died of a stroke four years later.

The screenplay for "Stan and Ollie" will be authored by Jeff Pope, one of the writers behind Stephen Frears' latest film, "Philomena."
